I am writing to express concern regarding the recent developments in the management of invasive species in Ontario. The Province's renewal of the Ontario Invasive Species Strategic Plan, as announced on November 20th, 2023, and the subsequent unveiling of the “Ontario Protecting the Economy and Environment by Taking Action Against Invasive Species” initiative on December 11th, 2023, have raised significant issues pertaining to the rights and interests of the Haudenosaunee.

It is disconcerting that the Haudenosaunee were not engaged in any form during the planning and development stages of these significant environmental initiatives. This lack of engagement is not only a missed opportunity for collaboration but also a potential oversight in honoring the treaty rights of the Haudenosaunee. The management of invasive species in Ontario is an issue that directly impacts our lands, resources, and traditional ways of life. It is imperative that our knowledge, perspectives, and rights are integrated into these processes to ensure holistic and effective strategies.

In light of this, I seek clarification on the following critical points:

1. At what stage, if at all, were Haudenosaunee Treaty rights considered during the formulation of the Ontario Invasive Species Strategic Plan and the related "Ontario Protecting the Economy and Environment by Taking Action Against Invasive Species" initiative?

2. How does the Ministry plan to engage with the Haudenosaunee Confederacy moving forward on these matters, given the absence of prior engagement? It is crucial that our input is sought and integrated into both current and future environmental management plans that impact our Treaty territories.

HDI is committed to working collaboratively towards solutions that respect our rights and contribute to the health and sustainability of our shared environment. We trust that the Ministry shares these goals and will act promptly to rectify this oversight.
