Hello,
I am writing to express my concern about the imminent threat climate change poses to our country, to our people and the future of our children. An overwhelming number of scientists agree, and signs abound that climate change is occurring much faster than was initially predicted. We have only a few critical years before the changes become irreversible.
More than 2,000 scientists contributing to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have made it clear that cuts of at least 50% to 70% in global greenhouse gas emissions are necessary to allow our climate to re-stabilise. Therefore, the Government should be making every effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – now.
Specifically, I believe in the issues listed below should be key to the Ontario Government agenda if the government really wants to claim that it is for the people and as such it should NOT repeal the Cap and Trade Act.
1. Reducing carbon dioxide emissions from coal fired power plants
2. Reducing emissions from the transport sector
3. Funding initiatives for alternative and renewable energy technology
4. Incentives for the uptake of renewable energy
To secure a future for our nation and our children now is NOT the time to be wasting government time and money on repealing legislation that is helpful. The Ontario government clearly wants to cut tax spending on wasteful acts ( as per the reduction of the Toronto wards), so why spend time and money on fighting a immoral battle that directly and negatively affects the people of Ontario? The fact that this would also mean a $400 million loss in federal funding, which is something that goes directly into the pockets of individual people who choose to embrace green initiatives is a problem. How does Ford plan to find similar funding and who would benefit from it?
I can only assume the PC government in Ontario does not have the interest of the people at heart if this is the type of Bill it wants to pass. And I worry this is a sign of Ford signing deals with corporations instead of with the people, and what that would mean for the state of the democratic system.
Sincerely,
Concerned Citizen
