Dear Sir/Madam,
This letter is in regards to the following.
Proposed designation under the Environmental Assessment Act of the landfill site and waste transfer and processing expansion, located in the former Town of Dresden, Municipality of Chatham Kent
ERO number
019-8417
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the proposed dump site that is slated to be developed near Dresden.
I have been a resident of Dresden for the last 15 years and working as a Realtor primarily in this town and my real estate office being just 500 metres from the proposed landfill site. I am also a partner in the new land subdivision as our sales agent. As a resident and homeowner in the vicinity, I have grave reservations about the potential negative impact this project could have on our community, particularly in terms of real estate values and overall quality of life.
Since the news of York 1 spread in this community we have already noticed that it is deterring prospective buyers and drive down demand for housing in our area, thereby slowing down the real estate market further and exacerbating financial losses for residents. We are trying to build more houses and build our town and want to be the part of the growth of 1.5 million homes by 2031. Unfortunately, the news about the York 1 proposal has given us a lot to ponder about the future of the entrepreneur’s and investors in our beautiful town of Dresden.
Everyday, I get multiple phone calls from the concerned residents as to what is going to happen with the values of their houses and if they should list their home now before this project is finalized. A lot of my clients are either young families or seniors and their residences are the single biggest investment they have. These phone calls keep me awake at night thinking about the future of Dresden and my clients.
Beyond the economic implications, there are also serious health and environmental considerations that must be addressed. Dump sites have been known to emit noxious odors, pollutants, and airborne contaminants, posing risks to both human health and the surrounding ecosystem. Additionally, the influx of garbage trucks and heavy machinery associated with dump operations can contribute to noise pollution and traffic congestion, further detracting from the desirability of our neighborhood. Also, the major concern about our farming community with the number of tractors and farming equipment on the roads during the farming season would essentially be competing with the massive number of trucks on the road. Unfortunately, the location of this site is very close to the residential neighbourhoods.
Collaborative efforts between developers, government officials, and community stakeholders are essential to finding sustainable solutions that address waste management needs without sacrificing the integrity of residential areas. We strongly urge you to designate that land for comprehensive environmental assessment.
Furthermore, I encourage transparency and open dialogue throughout the decision-making process, allowing residents to voice their concerns and actively participate in shaping the future of our community. By working together towards a mutually beneficial outcome, we can ensure the long-term prosperity and livability of our town for generations to come.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my concerns. I am optimistic that your ministry will designate the land for comprehensive environment assessment.
Sincerely,
Krista Mall,
