Research findings which are referenced should be published on the ERO page so Ontarians can make informed comments. Trapping laws need to put animal welfare first and should be guided by current scientific findings. The commercial fur industry and its guidelines have no relevance here. Both snares and relaxing cable restraints are not certified traps under the agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards. Research has shown that killing and restraining snares result in negative animal welfare outcomes for both target and non-target animals. Farmers throughout Ontario should be encouraged and supported in using non-lethal, predator friendly farming methods rather than trapping wildlife. It’s no surprise that many countries around the world have banned snares entirely. It’s time Ontario gets on board.
