• Canada is part of the Agreement of International Humane Trapping Standards. These proposed cable restraints are not certified traps.
• Research has shown that these Killing and Restraining Snares result in negative animal welfare outcomes for both target and non-target animals and should not be used in Ontario. Snares are not certified traps under the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards and should be prohibited in the province.
• Ontario is moving backwards in all aspects of Animal Welfare. Many countries around the world have prohibited snares entirely and it’s time for the province to end the use of these devices and move toward a humane treatment of precious Wildlife and Domestic Animals.
• Farmers should be encouraged to use non-lethal, predator friendly farming methods instead of trapping wildlife and other animals.
• This proposal should not even be considered without the Province publishing the research findings it references on the ERO page so that the public can make informed comments on this consultation.
• Laws around trapping need to prioritize animal welfare and should be informed by current, peer-reviewed science, not guidelines created by the commercial fur industry.
* Traps are an outdated, inhumane form if killing animals and should be prohibited in Ontario. There is plenty of research available to prove that the result of an animal killed or retrained by these devices in considered cruel and inhumane and unnecessary.
* I strongly oppose the proposed changes and encourage the Ontario Government to move toward a humane treatment of all animals in the province.
