After 30 yrs of hunting moose in Ontario, I'm ready to throw in the towel. Over the last5-7 years I have seen the moose heard dwindle in different areas. This yr we booked what was supposed to be a dream hunt in what was supposed to be 1 of the most remote highly populated lakes in Ontario with Grey Woods outfitters ( Windsor Lake). My group of 6 was utterly dissappointed. After paying a very large sum of money, we never seen 1 moose. Hunting morning till night ,travelling miles upon miles threw the river system, posting and calling, doing drives in what should be moose paradise and did not even see any fresh tracks, or browse or beds. After years of success we can totally tell the herd is very low, with wolf tracks everywhere we turned. Our pilots told us after the hunt that it was the worst moose hunting season in there history and told us the amount of packs have wolves have sky rochted and have been telling the ministry for years now and refuse to do anything about. The group of Americans the week before us said the same thing and will never return therefore less buisness for outfitters and therefore less buisness for flying operations. They told us over 100 camps they flew people into only 15 moose had been harvested and we were 1 of the last camps of the season ! Also I believe the spring bear that was canceled for years also took its tolls on moose population and it don't take scienctists to figure that out. The Ontario government needs to manage the wolf population like Quebec does or even more aggressively before the government and hard working people loose there jobs cause the moose herd was not managed properly.
How about 2 or 3 yrs of no cows and calf tags, or a system that only allows cows to he harvested every 3rd yr like
Yr 1 bulls only
2nd yr bulls and calves
3rd bulls ,cows and calves
Repeat
With prices of everything going up moose hunters that our not successful will end up quitting like many have. Also natives which dump there freezers every year and continue to shoot more moose than they need so white man don't get any is unbelievable and I have witnessed 1st hand more than 5 times. Look in the dumps around Nipigon around labor day or the week before the rifle season. Our old area 15b we would go a week before to get our camp and scout and have witnessed natives night hunting, shooting from roads, shooting from trucks and nothing being done after notifying conservation officers
My God do the right things so people who enjoy the outdoors can feed there families of clean, organic meat and stories to tell there kids, like my dad did.
Listen to what hunters are telling you ,not what city people who dont hunt or travel to the northern outdoors tell you.....
