The proposed plan to adjust the flow of sewage to the west channel at Ontario place is being criticised as a potential health hazard. Architects, environmental experts and others in the news have raised concerns that the plan would create a virtual bathtub where the flow of sewage inside the break wall could be a breeding ground for ecoli, listeria and other potential health hazards. Aside from my economic and ecological concerns for the project as a whole, this move in particular is troubling, especially as it affects the beaches and waterfront I love to frequent in my neighbourhood such as Marylin Bell park: while the province insists that they will mitigate any public health concerns and risks, they’re not experts nor are they scientists. We need independent and sound assessment that is not invested in the deal the way our conservative government is. I believe there is cause of concern that would be a conflict of interest for the province who is invested in this project, despite a solid opposition from concerned citizens. Please move carefully and slowly with respect for proper environmental assessment and react according to recommendations, with the protection of citizens and constituents that are footing the bill in mind.
