I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposal for an interim combined sewer to support development for the Therme spa. This project poses a serious threat to the health of Lake Ontario, undermining decades of work to improve water quality and restore natural ecosystems.
Combined sewer overflows are a well-documented source of pollution, introducing raw sewage, chemicals, and other contaminants into the lake during heavy rainfall. This results in increased nutrient loading, harmful algal blooms, and oxygen depletion—threatening fish populations, aquatic habitats, and overall biodiversity. At a time when freshwater ecosystems are already under immense stress from climate change, pollution, and habitat loss, adding another source of contamination is irresponsible.
Furthermore, Lake Ontario is a critical source of drinking water for millions of people and a key component of the Great Lakes ecosystem. The degradation of water quality affects not only wildlife but also public health and recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating. This proposal is a step backward in the ongoing effort to protect and restore one of Canada’s most vital freshwater resources.
Given the significant environmental risks, I urge the rejection of this permit in favor of sustainable alternatives that prioritize the long-term health of Lake Ontario and its surrounding ecosystems.
