I am writing to express my profound opposition to Ontario's Bill 5, the "Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act." While the bill purports to expedite economic development, it poses significant risks to our environment and undermines essential environmental protections.

Key Environmental Concerns:

1 Exemption from Environmental Assessments: Bill 5 grants the provincial government the authority to designate "special economic zones" where projects can bypass critical environmental assessments. This exemption threatens to accelerate development without proper evaluation of potential environmental impacts, such as habitat destruction and pollution.

2 Undermining Species Protection: The bill includes provisions that would weaken protections for at-risk species by narrowing the definition of "habitat" and eliminating requirements for recovery strategies. This could lead to the destruction of vital ecosystems without adequate mitigation measures.

3 Weakening Conservation Authority Oversight: Bill 5 diminishes the role of Conservation Authorities in land use planning, shifting responsibilities to municipalities that may lack the resources or expertise to manage environmental risks effectively. This could result in increased development in sensitive areas like wetlands and floodplains.

4 Threats to Farmland and Natural Areas: The bill facilitates urban sprawl by removing protections for farmland and natural areas, making them susceptible to development. This not only threatens biodiversity but also undermines efforts to combat climate change by reducing carbon sinks.

5 Lack of Indigenous Consultation: First Nations leaders have expressed concerns that the bill undermines their jurisdiction by exempting projects from regulations without proper consultation. This disregard for Indigenous rights and knowledge further exacerbates environmental injustices.

This proposed Bill is not what we stand for as Ontarian's. I urge the government to find a way to continually boost Ontarios economy without sacrificing the environment and further damaging our relationships with the indigenous peoples of Ontario.
