Irish School Road, my childhood, my youth, even some of my adulthood. My parents and Grandmother still live there. Running barefoot between the farms to grandma’s house for a treat, the sunset over the field, setting in the west is my childhood. I ran for fair ambassador, smelled the tomato harvest, and enjoyed our tourism filled town. I still call Dresden my hometown even though I do not live there. My husband and I go the farm every Sunday for family meals, most of the summer ones shared outside. We camp there every summer. I cannot not imagine a busier road, the noise pollution, the smell of waste blowing from the north over the farms and the community of Dresden. It will impact the enjoyment of life outdoors. This site needs the proper environmental assessment, there is a creek near the proposed dumping site and the Sydenham River. Will the drainage be connecting to the creek, or where does the run off go? Not only that my parents and grandma’s well water is fed by the watershed. Will there be surface run off and land and soil contamination? More methane gas? Will the water be drinkable and who is going to pay for the testing and new filtration systems which will need to be installed? What about all the endangered species in the area and the effect on wildlife? The woodlots nearby as well. What about pest/rodents and vectors from the dumping site?
Irish school road is a main road (21 Hwy), the camping rv’s that go through all summer and regular vehicular traffic on a daily basis is very busy, not including farm season, and the tomato run season. The noise pollution will affect the nearby houses and the town tremendously. The roads in the town of Dresden are not made for heavy trucks, and to go around Dresden there are many bridges to go over. Do those bridges met the weight restrictions? Will the road become backed up due to trucks turning?
Very importantly there are health concerns, what are the long term affects from living near a dump, the dust and air emissions, the water run off as I mentioned before. The houses in that area are fed off well water. What about fire concerns? What effect on the farmland and agricultural yields? What about real estate values and the visual impact?
I really do hope you take all these thoughts into consideration before throwing away the environmental assessments. These are families, children, and community lives that are going to be affected. The impact on the tourist town will be hit very hard, as these small businesses thrive on this community and the wonderful people who come to visit the town.
Sincerely former Dresden resident.
