I am writing to express my strong opposition to Ontario Bill 5, which proposes significant rollbacks to the Endangered Species Act. This legislation would allow developers to bypass essential habitat protections by paying into a fund instead of restoring or protecting at-risk species' habitats. Such measures prioritize short-term economic gains over the long-term health of our ecosystems.
With over 230 species at risk in Ontario, including the redside dace and butternut tree, we cannot afford to weaken safeguards that are vital for their survival. The proposed changes would reduce habitat protection durations and expand exemptions for industrial activities, undermining the recovery of these species.
As a resident of Ontario, I urge the government to uphold its responsibility to protect our natural heritage. Instead of dismantling environmental protections, we should strengthen them to ensure a sustainable future for all Ontarians.
