I understand the pressures and urgency felt to address the economic problems that are current. That is why now it is important to respond in a way that truly builds Ontario's future economic resilience with thoughtful, well- researched and openly monitored actions. However, the Ministerial and selected designates will be given unquestionable powers to override the existing laws and protections of rights of municipalities and citizens- and appears to ignore the sovereignty of Indigenous Peoples as it also demonstrates lack of respect for their knowledge and history on the land. The rush to "cut red tape" compromises these rights and the integrated planning efforts to maintain climate stability and protect essential assets:one third of Canada's surface fresh water, the natural carbon storage of the "Breathing Lands"- migratory bird stopovers like James Bay, Long Point and Point Pelee ( reference Wildlife Conservation Society of Canada) Stack those irreplaceable assets and suspension of civilian freedoms against relatively short term economic generators like The Eagles Nest Mine, the Therme-Ontario Place redevelopment and the expansion of the waste disposal at Dresden, a possible tunnel under the 401 highway, the mining of the Ring of Fire- Will these large projects - "Special Economic Zones" payoff in the many years to come? Or will the cost be ugly, unforgettable, irremediable loss of genuine value and respect for law, nature, and civilian rights.
