I understand the need to support economic activity in the face of tariff threats and the new reality of the changing relationship with the US.
However, I am uncomfortable with giving government unlimited ability to waive any and all regulatory checks and balances that this proposed legislation allows.
It is indicated that projects and initiatives in these economic zones will meet a high level with respect to various factors including environmental concerns. However, it also indicates that any and all approval/processes/regulatory steps can be waived. This is contradictory. What then actually ensures that important issues such as environmental impacts will be reviewed and considered?
This absolute, carte blanche approach that allows for the possibility of completely unreviewed and unregulated activity is going too far. I would potentially support a modified version of this proposal that clearly ensures that a bare minimum of baseline checks and reviews will remain in place.
