I am writing to express my concern and opposition to Bill 5's Proposed Amendments to the Mining Act, Electricity Act, and Ontario Energy Board Act.
The proposed changes to the Mining Act raise significant concerns about environmental protection and Indigenous rights. By streamlining the approval process for mining projects, there is a risk of undermining thorough environmental assessments and meaningful consultations with Indigenous communities. It is imperative that any development respects the rights of Indigenous Peoples and safeguards our natural ecosystems.
The amendments to the Electricity Act and Ontario Energy Board Act could compromise the independence and effectiveness of the Ontario Energy Board (OEB). Granting the Minister increased authority to override OEB decisions may lead to politicization of energy regulation, reducing transparency and public trust. The OEB's role as an independent regulator is crucial for ensuring fair and evidence-based decisions that serve the public interest.
Furthermore, these changes may impact energy affordability and the equitable distribution of energy resources. It is essential to maintain regulatory frameworks that prioritize consumer protection and the transition to sustainable energy sources.
Withdraw Bill 5 in its entirety.
