To whom it may concern,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to Schedule 11 of Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, which proposes the Special Economic Zones Act, 2025.
This legislation would enable Cabinet to designate large areas as special economic zones where major development projects could proceed without proper environmental assessments, public consultation, or Indigenous consent. This undemocratic shortcut centralizes decision-making power, undermining transparency, accountability, and meaningful participation by communities and Indigenous peoples.
Removing environmental assessments and public input threatens the health of our land, water, and ecosystems. It also risks violating Indigenous rights and treaty obligations by sidelining consultation and consent processes that are essential for respectful and just governance.
Ontarians have not asked for legislation that concentrates power in the hands of a few, bypassing the democratic safeguards designed to protect our environment and communities. This bill reflects a troubling trend of prioritizing rapid industrial development over long-term ecological resilience and social justice.
I urge the Ontario government to reject Schedule 11 and any efforts to diminish environmental protections, public engagement, and Indigenous rights.
True economic growth depends on a healthy environment and a fair, transparent decision-making process that respects all Ontarians.
Thank you.
