I strongly oppose the removal of the Environmental Assessment (EA) requirement for the proposed landfill in Dresden, Ontario.
This site is 500 metres from homes, 800 metres from a school, and located next to wetlands, floodplain, and farmland. It sits above the Kettle Point aquifer — the same formation involved in the 2021 Wheatley explosion. Documents obtained by Dresden CARED show methane gas at explosive levels is already present at this site.
Removing the EA is reckless, especially when York1’s own filings confirm:
No clear waste volume or site limit exists
No approved Operations Plan is in place
No confirmation of soil stability or geotechnical safety
The project includes asbestos waste and other hazardous materials
It’s on a former police bomb/gun range with no full environmental review
There is no justifiable reason to exempt this site from a full Environmental Assessment — and every reason to uphold public safety, environmental science, and transparency.
I call on the Ministry to:
Reject Bill 5’s exemption clause for this site
Immediately reinstate the full Environmental Assessment
Honor commitments made to the community in 2024
We’ve already seen what happens when explosive gases are ignored. Don’t let Dresden become another Wheatley.
