Bill 5 is a direct attack on Ontario’s environmental assets. In today’s current climate crisis, it is not the time to reverse environmental protections. It is undeniable that weather has become more unpredictable, with floodings, wildfires and even tornadoes becoming more prevalent. Destroying critical habitat does not only affect species at risk but also the people of Ontario.
Ontarians value green space and the role of nature within their communities. Nature plays a crucial role in buffering natural disasters— trees provide oxygen, wetlands are huge carbon sinks and reduce flooding. Ontario is home to many species at risk which are already struggling to survive with habitat loss, fragmentation, and road mortality. To pass this Bill would be removing the protections that prevent species extinction. Humans have been driving the next mass extinction, Ontario should NOT be leading this event.
As a student ecologist, I urge you to prevent this Bill from moving forward. It would endanger ALL lives within Ontario, we need to create environmental solutions NOT catastrophes.
