I am not in support of the Special Economic Zones Act, 2025 as currently proposed.
The premise that US tariffs justify the provisions in this act are misleading in my opinion and are being used as cover to remove necessary oversight and centralize power inappropriately.
This act would effectively eliminate legislative oversight in important decision making, giving the Premier and Cabinet the power to decide which laws will and won’t apply in the ‘Special Economic Zones’, who will be able to operate within them and under what conditions, and where they will be. It removes the rights of First Nations and the public to participate in the process of land use change. It is designed with the potential to negate other considerations, including social and environmental values, for shorter term economic considerations at the discretion of provincial politicians with no recourse for local stakeholders.
The Special Economic Zones Act is poorly envisioned, misguided and an attempt to centralize decision making power inappropriately.
Thank-you for your consideration.
