I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Special Economic Zones Act, 2025.

This proposed Act is a threat to democracy, accountability and the rule of law and it should be withdrawn. The proposal for a Special Economic Zones in which the Minister would "identify which regulations, permits, processes, approvals, and similar requirements will be exempted, altered or continue to apply" is effectively a proposal for rule by Ministerial dictate alone. Such an Act has no place in a democracy.

The labour and environmental laws which protect Ontarians would be threatened by this proposed Act. Indigenous rights to free, prior and informed consent would be thrown aside.

At a time when democracy, accountability and the rule of law are under threat globally, it is disheartening, to say the least, to see our provincial government following suit. This Act must be rejected in its entirety.
