I am deeply disturbed by Bill 5: both the gutting of the endangered species act rendering it toothless and the extravagant discretionary powers granted to the executive to create "special economic zones" - a provision that undermines our deep constitutional value of the rule of the law. I urge the government to withdraw this legislation and to start to truly take conservation seriously. Why? Because when we eviscerate the environment, we eviscerate ourselves and all of our most important relationships to the natural world. I imagine this Bill 5 will create fierce resistance and I look forward to being part of it.
