Hamilton Spectator Article, Oct 15 1977: “residents may disagree, but this OHC development on James North has been called a ghetto” -- project was to provide good quality housing for those displaced for rejuvenation -- long before first spade turned, called ugly and resembling former prison barracks -- former Controller Jim Campbell, “They tore down a factory and now they propose to build homes that look like factories.” -- former Alderman Charlie Cupido called it a “slum and ghetto” -- City Community Development Commissioner, Ed Kowalski says planning had been poor and a similar project would not be built today.
This has been a disaster from the beginning.
Even the photo choice on this Ontario website is rough.
I won't get into the history of the rail companies and their fights with Hamilton, but just so you are aware, the higher levels of government have almost always sided with the railway.
Communities around the world have fine buildings along rail routes.
Please, for the love of god, help this community become something we can be proud of.
