I am writing in strong support of the proposed redevelopment of the former Jamesville public housing site at on James Street North. This long-stalled project is essential for Hamilton’s housing future and deserves immediate approval through a Minister’s Zoning Order (MZO).
The plan would deliver 46 rent-geared-to-income units, 114 supportive housing units, and over 300 market-rate homes—creating a mixed-income, transit-oriented community just steps from the West Harbour GO Station. This aligns with both provincial and municipal housing goals. If anything, I think more geared to income and supportive housing units developed here.
CN Rail's objections to this development are ridiculous, and frankly, it's disgusting they have been able to drag this out for so long when appropriate measures for noise etc., have been included in the proposal and we already have housing directly next to their yard and we build homes near much louder areas such as Hamilton airport.
Families were displaced to make way for this redevelopment. It’s unacceptable that years later, the site remains empty while the housing crisis worsens. This project offers new homes, green space, and a better future for Hamilton’s North End.
I urge the province to approve the MZO and let this critical housing project finally move forward.
