It is unacceptable that the province is even considering selling off this land. First and foremost, Wasaga Beach and Allenwood and New Wasaga Beach are centrepieces of Ontario and the GTA landscape. They are some of the most accessible and safest areas to access waterfront in the province. As climate change brings additional and worsening heatwaves, access to the waterfront to keep cool will be essential. This will also help to limit the burden on the energy grid. It is a beautiful area with safe swimming and this also contributes to mental wellbeing of the citizens of Ontario. It is NOT right to expect everyone who can’t afford a beach side home or (let’s be honest) a cottage on the waterfront to squeeze into overcrowded beaches. SO MUCH of the waterfront areas in Ontario are already developed and no longer accessible to the public. It is a shame and should not be allowed. Wasaga Beach and its surrounding beaches are institutions and should remain as such.
Wasaga Beach, Allenwood Beach, and New Wasaga Beach also provide essential habitats for a number of species and fulfill important ecological niches that are jeopardized by the act of development and the presence of houses.
This government MUST stop selling off public or ecologically sensitive land to enrich developers who have no respect for public places. Ontario public land should remain PUBLIC and not be sold off to the most convenient bidder. There is NO justification for this proposal.
