Hello,
I'm excited that the proposed updates to the Devil's Glen management plan includes adding rock climbing as a permitted recreational use.

I've been a rock climber for the last 8 years, and it has been a very important part of my life. As a Professional Engineer, my career can be quite stressful. Rock climbing has been a way for me to completely disconnect and refresh my mind. Outdoor climbing in particular is important to me. Engaging with nature, and challenging myself is extremely rewarding and relaxing in a way that is hard to explain. Training my mind to focus on the immediate challenge has benefited both my life and work. There is data to support climbing's benefit for stress reduction and mental health benefits (see the supporting link below for details). The benefits of being outdoors in nature is well understood.

The rock climbing at Devil's Glen in the areas outside the current park boundary is excellent, and there are more opportunities within the park. Southern Ontario has limited areas where outdoor rock climbing can be practiced due to our geography and land use limitations. Increasing the area where it is permitted will give more opportunities to enjoy what Ontario has to offer as the sport continues to grow in popularity.
The rock climbing community in Ontario is closely knit and tends to have a real passion for the outdoors, and protecting nature. We have organized "crag cleanup" days at the Conservation Halton properties where climbers clear out trash left by all park users (not just climbers). Leave no trace is a philosophy most climbers hold each other to. I personally believe in setting a good example for all land users.

I feel that rock climbing will be a great addition to the park and I'm excited that it's being considered.
