I am vehemently opposed to any and all changes to regulation that reduce protections for species at risk, including those that remove species from the recognized at-risk species lists.
Late last week, it was announced that the Ontario government will cease to recognize more than 106 different species at risk, ranging from the Eastern Mole, Eastern Musk Turtle and Cougars, to the endangered Red Side Dace and Red-Headed Woodpecker. This is directly related to the passing of Bill 5 six months ago, and represents an unacceptable prioritization of industrial and commercial profits above responsible environmental conservation.
It is exactly this kind of commercial interests bias that has made the era of modern humans one of the Earth’s great mass extinction events, has resulted in skyrocketing cancer rates, microplastics in almost every living tissue on our planet, and created climate shift who’s cascading effects may end human civilization outright.
The government’s proposal is not in the public’s best interest.
