I strongly oppose this proposal under Bill 60 – Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, 2025. It removes critical decision making power from our cities, even when local evidence and community support back street redesigns by barring municipalities from reducing vehicle lanes to install bike lanes. That’s a direct blow to local democracy and responsive governance.

By banning reductions of motor vehicle lanes when installing bike lanes, this legislation undermines efforts to create safer streets and puts EVERYONE, people driving, walking, biking at greater risk.

The proposal also threatens other vital uses of road space: transit priority lanes, safe school street zones, curbside patios, accessible bus stops and loading zones. All of these rely on flexible use of existing lanes which this legislation severely restricts.

By keeping our street designs locked into car dominant layouts, this legislation also undermines Ontario’s climate and public health goals. Encouraging cycling and walking is a proven way to reduce emissions, improve health outcomes and relieve pressure on our road network. This bill moves us backward.

Please reject these amendments and preserve the ability of municipalities to build safe, sustainable and efficient streets.
