Thank you for this opportunity to comment on the proposed language in Bill 60
I have significant concerns about this Bill as written because:
- It means that cities lose their local authority over decision-making that is appropriate to that level of government, even when projects are supported by evidence and by local residents.
- It will make traffic congestion worse, not improve it. When people ride bikes to get around instead if driving, there is less traffic on the road. The government’s own experts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock.
-It will make roads more dangerous. As a driver, I prefer sharing road space with cyclists when they are in their own separated lane. When cyclists are forced to share the curb lane with cars it makes driving much more stressful, and cycling more dangerous. It is clear that protected bike lanes prevent serious injuries and deaths for people biking, walking, and driving.
- It threatens other uses of road space that I also enjoy and rely on, like transit priority lanes (which also reduce congestion) and restaurant patios.
-It undermines public health and the vibrancy of life in cities by locking us into car-dependent street designs.
Thank you for your consideration of these issues.
