The Species Conservation Act is going to have irreversible damage for at-risk species in Ontario. This new act aims to remove protections from 35 at-risk bird species in the province which is dangerous and negligible due to the nature of these animals. 40% of bird species have been lost in Canada over the past 50 years which is a harrowing vision of how both the country’s and province’s environment is shaping up to be. Birds are extremely sensitive to their environments which makes them valuable indicators to the health and statues of our ecosystem, systems that provide us with pollination, pest control, and huge revenues of recreation. They need protection at all points in their life cycle, from egg to adulthood, as well as every location. These lack of protections could begin to impact on migrating birds who do not reside in Canada year-round, infringing on the Migratory Birds Act.
If you must implement the Species Conservation Act, PLEASE implement stronger protections for birds. I understand delisting is important to get through the backlog of species waiting for a status report, HOWEVER this is not what’s happening here. If you want my suggestions for a simpler solution, REPEAL BILL 5 AND REINSTATE THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT!
