The proposed changes allow for loopholes that can negatively impact species-at-risk habitats. The environment is a giant weave and species-at-risk make up some of the many strands. Bill 5 challenges the existence of species-at-risk, weakening the entire ecosystem and leading to unpredictable outcomes. The province is naive for pushing this responsibility onto federal laws and individuals.

Of the 106 species that will no longer have protection, many of them are aerial insectivores that are crucial for pest and disease control in wetlands, grasslands, forests, and even your backyard. Aerial insectivores are already suffering major population losses due to habitat loss and this bill just reinforces that (Nebel et al., 2020).

The provincial government needs to invest into projects that help protect these species.
