Dear Premier Doug Ford,
I am the Acadian Flycatcher, a small but mighty bird that plays a crucial role in Ontario’s
biodiversity. My presence signals the health of mature forests, where I nest and help control
insect populations. I am not just another bird—I am an indicator species, reflecting the well-
being of the ecosystems that sustain countless other wildlife.
But I am in danger. Habitat destruction, climate change, and deforestation threaten my survival.
And now, the greatest risk comes from Bill 5, which weakens the protections that safeguard
endangered species like me. By replacing the Endangered Species Act with the Species
Conservation Act, this bill prioritizes development over conservation, stripping away the
safeguards that ensure Ontario’s biodiversity remains intact.
Without strong environmental protections, I—and many other species—will vanish. My
disappearance would signal the decline of Ontario’s forests, disrupting the delicate balance that
sustains life across the province. Protecting me means protecting the integrity of our
ecosystems, ensuring future generations can enjoy the rich natural heritage Ontario is known
for.
I urge you to reverse Bill 5, restore strong protections, and commit to preserving
Ontario’s wildlife—including me. The future of biodiversity in our province depends on it.
