Although Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are unlikely to apply within the Town given it is almost entirely urban, the proposed changes raise concerns about broader environmental impacts. Land, water, and air are shared resources, and their degradation does not respect municipal boundaries. These changes prioritize short- and medium-term economic gains at the expense of long-term, and in some cases irreversible, environmental impacts. They also undermine collective municipal efforts to address climate change by removing natural features that help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and by promoting extractive industries that increase them.
