Do not remove any endangered species from the registry. This registry is a science based assessment compiled by researchers and experts—something that the conservative government may be unfamiliar with. (Scientists are people who have spent years studying and learning in universities and in the field to earn a degree in order to apply said knowledge to their work duties.) Government lacks the kind of expertise to be overriding this registry. The new legislation makes listing species at the discretion of the government rather than on science-based assessments by the Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Ontario (COSSARO), allowing political or economic pressures to influence which species receive protection.
While many of these species may still be listed federally under the Species at Risk Act (SARA), the provincial action, including recovery strategies and habitat regulations, will be eliminated.
Removal of these species from protection is a significant weakening of conservation law, prioritizing development and industry interests at the expense of biodiversity during a global extinction crisis.
