I am deeply concerned about the Province’s proposed amalgamation of Ontario’s conservation authorities and the broader approach to “streamlining” environmental processes. This risks further undermining local decision-making, scientific expertise, and the protection of our natural environment and watersheds—resources critical to communities across Ontario.
Local conservation authorities safeguard biodiversity, natural heritage, farmland, and infrastructure from flooding, erosion, and other risks. Further reducing their independence and centralizing authority prioritizes short-term gains for a few over the long-term health of communities and ecosystems. While efficiency is important, it must not come at the cost of transparency, local knowledge, or environmental integrity. While “streamlining” is often framed as improving efficiency, history has shown that such measures frequently distance decision-makers from accountability and erode local input which puts vulnerable ecosystems and communities at risk. The expertise and local understanding of conservation authorities are critical in ensuring that growth happens responsibly and sustainably.
I urge this government to:
• Respect and enhance the expertise and independence of local conservation authorities.
• Ensure transparent, meaningful consultation with conservation authorities, municipalities, Indigenous communities, and the public.
• Prioritize sustainable, science-based land-use planning that protects our environment for current and future generations.
Ontarians have already spoken out against Bill 5, Bill 56, and attacks on the Greenbelt—this is no different. Protecting our waters, lands, and biodiversity is not just an environmental goal; it is the foundation of healthy communities and a strong economy. Local knowledge and accountability must remain central in all future decisions.
