I am concerned that this proposal will do more harm than good, by removing the specific areas of focus for conservation areas you reduce their ability to assist their communities effectively; they'll be stretched to thin.
And what protections are in place for people already employed under the current system, the environment minister claims no jobs will be lost while in the same breath says that management positions will be "redeployed" into "front-line roles", "There'd be an opportunity to redeploy them into front-line services — that's what I mean when I say no job losses are anticipated". Does this mean that people employed under the current system will be pushed into completely different roles? Should they expect pay-cuts? It seems that what they're saying is that nobody will be fired, just that they'll leave for a better paying job, in the role they were fulfilling before, somewhere else.
The claimed aim of this proposal is, "improving the province’s conservation authority system to help get shovels in the ground faster on homes and other local infrastructure projects, while strengthening the vital role conservation authorities play in managing watersheds and protecting communities from floods and natural hazards". How does it make sense that building more homes and other infrastructure on protected land = managing and protecting watersheds and preventing floods. Wouldn't building homes closer and closer to our watersheds cause more flooding by removing the plants and animals that keep floods at bay, while also restricting rivers and streams ability to alter it's course over time. Again increasing risk of flooding.
When it comes down to it, this whole idea seems counter intuitive and pointless, and I hope that somewhere along the line it is stopped.
