I am strongly opposed to the Ontario Government’s plan to consolidate our current local conservation authorities from over 30 to just 7. At a time when water levels are imperilled by drought and heatwaves and local knowledge, expertise and monitoring is more needed than ever to manage this precious resource responsibly, consolidating the conservation authorities so drastically in the name of efficiency is moving totally in the wrong direction. Common standards across all the authorities are logical and necessary, but achieving those standards by dismantling the authorities who know their watersheds best is wrong-headed. It smells of yet another weakening of environmental controls and standards to push through more developments with fewer constraints. Both development that is environmentally sustainable is achievable… do both. We expect it of our government.
