I think the Ford government needs a reminder of why the conservation authorities were formed in the first place, and why their authority over these critical and sensitive areas was expanded since their inception. We do not need another hurricane Hazel incident, or a walkerton ecoli outbreak. The risks of another disaster such as these has grown with the changes to our climate. Does the ford government also need a reminder of all of the flooding that has happened in toronto? Dismantling the agency of the conservation authorities is not a way to fix these problems, and “get homes built faster” like the ford government claims for the reason for these bills. Building in flood plains and destroying wetlands is only going to make these problems worse and increase costs for the province and municipalities. These places are priceless and irreplaceable. The conservation authorities provided oversight and created a means for sharing costs during the planning efforts for developments, reducing costs for municipalities. Being the “Conservative Party” they should understand and see the financial benefit that these public agencies provide, and the risk mitigation that is provided by the critical wetlands on watersheds across ontario. The fact that they leave very little time for comment on these bills, and continue to destroy 80 years of good policy development by 1000 cuts is despicable and undemocratic. I would hope that the government will reverse course on what they are doing.
