It is my opinion that this proposal by the provincial government is irresponsible. It is clear—and has been for some time—that the priority of this government is to deregulate, defund, and degrade the responsibilities of conservation authorities and other environmental organizations across the province.

The most important voices in conservation are those of local experts—employed, contracted, and consulted by conservation authorities—many of whom would be lost through the proposed amalgamation. This so-called “plan” has been presented with no clear priorities, no financial analysis, no acknowledgment of the long-term commitment required for environmental conservation, and no consultation with First Nation communities.

While the stated goals appear to include streamlining funding, consolidating redundancies, and restructuring boundaries to reflect a “watershed-based” network, there is little to no evidence, data, or clear rationale to demonstrate how this plan would benefit our communities. No financial analysis has been produced to show how this proposal would improve upon the current system. Furthermore, lake-based boundaries are fundamentally inconsistent with a true watershed-based approach.

This rushed proposal appears to have been developed without sufficient thought or consultation with those who will be directly affected. In my view, this amalgamation will harm the economy, damage sensitive ecosystems, negatively impact residential communities, and significantly affect a workforce deeply committed to improving our communities.

Conservation authorities are staffed by passionate, dedicated, and hardworking individuals, many of whom work for low wages under the stress of short-term contracts, yet remain in this sector out of genuine commitment to conservation. It would be both irresponsible and disrespectful to proceed with a complete overhaul of these authorities without meaningful consultation with these professionals.

Throughout its time in power, this provincial government has repeatedly prioritized the financial interests of developers over those of its constituents. Numerous large-scale projects—including highway development, the redevelopment of Ontario Place, and Greenbelt development—have been rushed and characterized by a severe lack of the consultation necessary for successful and sustainable outcomes. This pattern is a significant concern for many Ontarians.

I urge the government to listen to the voices of those raising concerns about this irresponsible proposal.
