In regards to the proposed amalgamation of Ontario's conservation authorities:
It seems to be a ridiculous waste of taxpayer dollars to amalgamate a system under the ruse of cost savings and expediting processes. I cannot think of one situation where making government agencies larger has improved the speed at which permitting is processed. Furthermore these conservation boundaries are marked by scientific borders pertaining to their watersheds, this maintains relevancy to local communities and the specific challenges they face compared to other regions. There should not be consistency in how permitting is done across Ontario because the people, population, environment, and geography is drastically different in each region - almost like there was a reason for the number of conservation authorities existing.
Additionally, the majority of conservation authority resources are from local municipal tax levies. I don't want my property tax to go to support conservation areas 2-3 hrs drive away, I want that money to stay in my community. I also want local representation on Conservation authority boards from my community not a city far away that has no relevancy on our region.
Overall this entire concept is wildly irresponsible and is clearly a ploy to try and destabilize the conservation authorities in Ontario. The premier needs to stop getting greased by developers and large corporations and start putting the needs of the average people first. This whole process is a massive waste of money to even discuss and consult on and shouldn't be happening.
I hope I have articulated my disproval of this proposal, and that it will have lasting consequences on Rural Ontario, my farm business, and the province as a whole.
