This government needs to understand why we have these conservation authorities. In 1954 Hurricane Hazel devastated Toronto and areas north of here. People had built housing too close to the waterways and the extreme flooding caused loss of life and property. After this our conservation authorities were formed and they need to remain, protecting us from floods, land erosion, and the development of housing in dangerous places. These regional authorities are well placed to judge how to protect us. Each part of Ontario has different needs, different environmental weaknesses and strengths and need the specific knowledge each group has about their areas. This would be a life endangering decision if it goes forward, especially with climate change and the changing weather patterns we are experiencing.
