I am writing to advise you that I am concerned with both the proposed boundaries and the process that has been developed to create the revisions to Ontario Conservation Authorities. I am old enough to remember the deaths and illness that resulted under the Mike Harris government as result of the lack of oversight and the cuts made that resulted in Walkerton. Don't repeat the same mistakes. Voters will hold the Conservative government responsible just as they did twenty-five years ago.
You have asked for comments on how the new proposed Conservation Authorities should be governed. This illustrates the lack of thought that has gone into your plan thus far. You should be proposing a model of governance that enhances and improves the current structure and then asking for input. It is irresponsible for the government to put forth this new model without given serious thought to how this will be governed. At this point it looks like the provincial government is merely downloading this responsibility to municipal government. This isn't the type of leadership that I expect from Doug Ford and the Conservative government.
Our climate is changing and we need to strengthen our efforts in conservation. This should be a provincial priority and funded by the province. This isn't the responsibility of property taxpayers.
I support modernizing and strengthening our conservation regulations. The tools to support this process, including how the new model will be governed should be developed prior to making sweeping changes to our current boundaries. The current process appears rushed and poorly planned. I expect much more from our provincial leaders.
