I do not support the proposed consolidation of Ontario’s conservation authorities. In my view, this initiative risks weakening environmental oversight at a time when strong, localized protection is critically needed.
Expanding regional boundaries will inevitably stretch conservation authorities’ resources and capacity. As organizations are forced to manage larger and more complex areas with limited staffing and funding, the quality and rigor of environmental assessments are likely to decline. This creates conditions where shortcuts become unavoidable, not out of negligence, but out of structural constraint. The consequences of this are serious: increased flooding risk, accelerated soil erosion, and long-term environmental degradation that will directly affect communities.
Conservation authorities have historically been effective precisely because of their local knowledge and regional specificity. Diluting that expertise in favor of consolidation undermines their ability to properly assess environmental risks and enforce protections, particularly in the context of ongoing development pressure and high-density construction.
I am also deeply concerned by the lack of transparent and proactive public engagement on this matter. Changes of this magnitude should be clearly communicated and meaningfully debated, as they carry long-term implications for environmental safety, public infrastructure, and community resilience.
Ontario’s natural environment is not a resource that can be treated as expendable without consequence. Conservation authorities must remain strong, adequately resourced, and independent in order to protect public safety and environmental integrity. I strongly urge decision-makers to reconsider this proposal and to prioritize environmental protection over short-term development interests.
