This is a transparent attempt to degrade the authority of conservation authorities. Leave one decent public institution alone without finding a way to make it worse. Provincial "oversight" only serves to remove the power people have in their own communities to make the change they want to see.
The centralization of power by Doug Ford's conservative party has been disgusting to see. He seems to be at war with the idea of Ontario having art, nature, or culture. Just more roads and kickbacks to his developer buddies. (Don't forget the 100 billion dollar highway tunnel!) Ontario is worse and worse every year because of Doug Ford and his buddies. Welcome to 2026, where the ON PC party has wrecked conservation, Ontario place, the science centre, nearly the greenbelt, almost got rent control, green home kickbacks, and our chances of having a decent place to live in the next 20 years.
This move will almost certainly result in poor watershed management, corporate and developer infringement of sensitive areas, and more red tape and bureaucracy to make any changes. The "streamlined permit" talk is a polite way of saying they will not take specific communities concerns into account and instead favour the company or rich guy. Another way for the Ontario government to shaft the working person.
I hope one day the people responsible for this shitshow face legal consequences.
