• What do you see as key factors to support a successful transition and outcome of regional conservation authority consolidation?
Far more authorities than planned, so they know their areas well and have deep relationships with Indigenous peoples, land trusts, municipalities and more. Ontario is far too big for 7. But if you must proceed, retain EVERY SINGLE ONE of the expert staff and leave them working primarily in the areas they are already familiar with. Local knowledge is critical.
• What opportunities or benefits may come from a regional conservation authority framework?
None without restoring in full the mandates you reduced in 2020.
• Do you have suggestions for how governance could be structured at the regional conservation authority level, including suggestions around board size, make-up and the municipal representative appointment process?
Majority environmental scientists and Indigenous knowledge-keepers, with particular attention to expertise in flood plains, watersheds and water keeping. No politicians allowed.
• How can regional conservation authorities maintain and strengthen relationships with local communities and stakeholders?
By being seen as trusted experts not swayed by political considerations or funding from developers. By being on the ground on properties under review, in hip waders not suits. By living and working locally.
