I am a resident of Ontario, living in a small rural village. I am opposed to the amalgamation of the 36 Ontario Conservation Authorities being proposed by the Ontario government. I was a Doug Ford supporter, but no longer. This is a step I cannot support. I have seen first hand the devastation that amalgamation can bring, especially to a poor rural area. When the provincial government decided to amalgamate municipalities in the 1990s my small village suffered immediately. All my property tax dollars now go to a central government located in another village. That village has benefitted substantially, while my home village is neglected. My village receives the bare minimum in municipal government support. I believe the same will happen with amalgamation of Conservation Authorities. The municipality where the Conservation is located, will receive the greatest benefits -- jobs, projects, etc. The rest of us will suffer again. All this is done in the name of economic efficiency. I don't believe it. It's a power grab, plain and simple.
