I am a resident of Windsor-Essex writing to express my strong opposition to the proposal to reduce Ontario’s 36 conservation authorities to 7 regional agencies. Ontario is home to such a rich diversity of species, many of which are species at risk. It is so important that this biodiversity is protected at a local level. Conservation Authority staff possess vital local knowledge of their communities, ecosystems, and how to best serve their needs. Not only does centralizing administration and management risk diminishing this expertise, it also risks reduced local accountability and limiting the voices of those directly affected by decisions made. I am especially concerned that a large regional board representing dozens of municipalities will not be able to effectively address specific local needs. And that restructuring risks disrupting critical work and losing years of locally developed expertise.

Ontario’s existing conservation authorities are a model for environmental protection. Their work isn't "red tape", it's science-based public safety and environmental protection. Exploring efficiencies can and should only be pursued without consolidation. This proposal is extreme and may result in job losses, weakened environmental protection, and the loss of local insight - it will not result in "improving conservation authorities".

Please take the time to consider these concerns and support our local conservation authorities.
