As a worker in the mental health housing sector I am horrified by the dire housing situations of many people who remain on the increasingly long wait list for subsidized housing as well as those who have not yet made it to the lists.

As a tenant of market rental housing myself I feel increasing anxiety about my own security as a renter in Toronto. Middle and working class populations in Toronto can no longer afford the purchase of their own home and even rental property in Toronto is becoming out of reach.

The Ontario Government’s Inclusionary Zoning Legislation MUST be amended to support the ability of middle, working and non working class populations in Toronto to continue in the city they call home. The current proposal benefits only those who seek to profit from housing development in the province. The changes must:

•Remove caps on the portion of affordable units allowed in each new development

•Remove caps on affordability periods. Allow affordable homes to stay affordable forever •Remove requirements to compensate developers

•Remove rules that exclude rental housing

•Learn from the best practices developed by over 800 US jurisdictions.
