I do not agree with the following proposed changes to Ontario Endangered Species Act. In particular; that developers will be able to pay to operate in habitats of species at risk, that the goal of protecting and restoring habitats will no longer be a priority, that being added to the Endangered Species list will no longer guarantee habitat protection, and that species will be allowed to go locally extinct as long as they still exist in other parts of Canada. It is our responsibility to prioritize the long term future health of all of the inhabitants of this province, including the flora and fauna found here, over short term economic gains. I ask that the following changes be made:
- Prioritize the recovery of at-risk species over the demands of developers.
- Repeal the industry exemptions under section 55.
- Ensure that habitat is protected and restored to facilitate species recovery, instead of merely mitigating the adverse impacts of harmful activities.
A strong Endangered Species Act will mean a stronger Ontario now and in the future.
