I am strongly opposed to exempt Ministry of Transport projects from the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act.
The health of my family, my neighbours, the plants and animals around me, are more important that speeding up construction of roads that will end up encouraging more people to drive cars.
Traffic jams encourage people to consider public transit, working from home, or virtual instead of in-person meetings.
Because all these projects will end up increasing greenhouse gas emissions, citizens need to be assured that no other damage to the environment will occur. We can't know that without study.
I am especially opposed to exempting Highway 7 from an environmental assessment. It's well known that the route goes through important wetlands, and that significant archaeological resources have already been discovered. Surely, for such a contentious project, we need to be sure we aren't going to wipe out plant or animal species. Complete the full environmental assessment, please.
