These are troubling changes…

These are troubling changes to the Planning Act, through the introduction of Bill 197 (COVID-19 Economic Recovery Act). The Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing is enabled to direct with impunity how land in Ontario will be developed, as dictated by a Minister’s Zoning Order (MZO).

This heavy-handed tool is central to the glass factory controversy currently facing Stratford, the surrounding area and our local government. It takes the power away from elected municipal councils – and therefore from the local citizenry – and hands it over the Minister and the Province.

I am totally disheartened with the steamroller attitude that our Provincial Government has adopted.
The implication that the Minister and the Province are the arbiters of what is best, without full local consultation and agreement is a non-starter!

This is a democracy, or at least I thought it was!
This attempt to subvert our local governments and citizens is an anathema and should be stopped.
