Some thoughts on this poorly developed proposal:
Given the current government’s horrendous slash and burn policies with respect to Ontario’s environment, including this atrocious but not exhaustive list:
• Enacting a Transitional Regulation exempting the government from natural heritage protection under the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, 2017 so that the Province could apply for a proposed waste facility site in the precious Freele County Forest. Imagine – a gargage dump in a forest!!! Toronto needs to start managing its own garbage, not dumping it wherever it can get away with it. What government was it that exempted Toronto from looking after its own garbage when every other municipality in Ontario has to?
• Bill 197's sweeping changes to the Environmental Assessment Act (EAA) including the expansion of provincial powers to unilaterally issue Ministerial zoning orders under the Planning Act, passed by the Ontario Legislature in July 2020 without public notice and comment opportunities under the province's Environmental Bill of Rights, leading to more tax-payers dollars being wasted in the courts as environmental groups fight for the very thing the government should be protecting – our biological heritage.
limiting the role and responsibilities of conservation authorities seems counter-productive. Instead of increasing the use of pesticides and ensuring there is little to stop anyone from utilizing them anywhere, the Ontario government should be developing nature-based solutions to the problems of climate change – extreme weather, invasive species, threats to our food supply and water protection.
We don’t need more developer-enriching subdivisions, we need green homes in resilient communities. Enhance the role of our conservation authorities and ensure that personnel is properly educated and have the resources needed to protect the people of Ontario from unmitigated profit-based development.
